How to Participate




The 2011-2012 CAHEP Artists in the 5th - Arts Fiesta Roster is now in all elementary schools in Thunder Bay
It contains all the information educators will need to participate in the programming.

To book an artist for Artists in the 5th, please look for this roster in your school.

Following are a list of suggested questions for teachers to ask artists (and vice versa):

Suggested Questions for Educators to ask an Artist.

  1. When was your most recent school visit? How many school visits did you do in 2009/2010?
  2. Do you have experience teaching and/or working with young people?
  3. Are you a professional artist?
  4. Do you have an up to date Criminal Background Check and a current T.B. Test?
  5. May I look through your portfolio?

Suggested Questions for an Artist to ask an Educator.

  1. Would you like to see my portfolio?
  2. What education/teaching experience do you have in the arts?
  3. Are you willing to collaborate on specific programming ideas so the expectations of the educator, artist, students and Core Arts Curriculum are met?
  4. Are you willing to commit fully to this project by being present at all times and by actively engaging in the lesson with the students?
  5. Are you willing to have the space the artist requires made available during the times the artist is in the school?

Suggestions for Artists re: Portfolio

  1. Artists description or profile
  2. Professional Resume
  3. Examples of your work: (slides, CD’s, photos, videos, website or reviews)
  4. Description of shows, workshops or residencies for/with young people.
  5. Examples of student work from your workshops or residencies.
  6. Availability.
  7. Copy of your Criminal Background Check and T.B. Test or letter that states the process has begun.
  8. References (including contact information) from at least 3 educators, community programmers or collaborators in relation to your show/work for/with young people.
  9. Any other promotional or support material.
  10. Knowledge of the Ontario Arts Curriculum as an integral part of successful work as an artist in the classroom.

How to Make the Most of an Artist's Visit

  1. Prepare your students in advance for the artist’s visit.
  2. Show your students you respect and value the artist’s work by being present for each session and engaged in the entire project
  3. Make sure the materials/space and technical requirements of the artist have been met
  4. Let your community know about the artist’s visit by including the information in your school's newsletter and posting the information in the staff room
  5. Make the artist feel welcome
