What About the Books

Project Information

What About the Books will collaborate with literary artists, literary organizations, and community and school libraries to create opportunities for the public and the school community to participate in literary arts to develop their relationships and increase engagement with the literary arts.

The collaboration provides a unique opportunity for creative engagement by exploring emerging issues in the literary arts and creating innovative access.

Literary Artists will engage the community in exploring literature- poetry, prose, drama, oral literature, narrative forms including memoirs, digital literature, films and videos and graphic novels and comics as well as literary genres and techniques.

Projects will incorporate word, typography, illustration, writing, calligraphy, papermaking, book making and binding. Through the engagement of multi-disciplinary artists including writers, illustrators, actors, visual artists and musicians that will delivery projects participants will explore the literary arts developing new associations and relationships from which they can continue their relationships. New venues for engagement will also be explored allowing for non-traditional engagement and reaching of alternative audiences.

What About the Books will have two phases:

Phase I engages the community in exploring the literary arts through experiences that would orientate Literary Artists to arts education delivery, facilitate the mentoring of emerging Literary Artists and allow the community to participate in small activities. Phase I will produce a resource for Literary Arts development and promotion of the literary arts.
Funding has been secured through the Ministry of Culture CSIF fund and through the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board for delivery Nov 2011- May 2012 in schools and library setting.

Phase II will allow for the development of more intensive creative literary arts projects that will be identified through the Phase I experience. Phase II projects will be presented to the public at an event, exhibit or venue as determined.
