Kam Valley teaches young violin students traditional and contemporary Canadian fiddle music. This genre has its roots in the traditional tunes brought to Canada by early pioneers principally from Scotland and Ireland. KVF meets Monday evenings September-June at Westgate High School and welcomes young musicians with one-two years Suzuki or traditional violin experience. Our website has a wealth of information. Since some of our current youngsters are home-schooled, they are available to demonstrate their skills during regular school hours.

Music Workshop is a very different music school and store offering an array of educational packages including: weekly in-store workshops, custom off-site workshops, musical field trips, plus individual and group lessons on a wide array of popular instruments, including; guitar, bass, piano, drum set, hand and fingerstyle drumming as well as an Introduction to Music Making (individual lessons using hand and stick drums plus mallet percussion). "Intro" is designed for anyone wanting a foundation in musicmaking skills that can be applied to any instrument. It is customized to each individual and can even include introductions to guitar, piano or drum set. It's great for someone who wants to make music and wants to spend some time deciding which instruments to explore. By focusing on large motor skills everyone can feel successful with music right away. Intro is great for kids (or
adults) who may not be ready to choose an instrument yet.

Some of the lessons offered by our team of teachers include; Guitar, Drum Set, Piano, Bass, Violin, Vocals, Music Theory and Rhythm Training which is great for all musicians. Drum Set lessons and Hand Drum (i.e. Conga, Djembe and Doumbek) classes are a specialty. Our drum studios feature multiple drum sets, percussion sets and high-end electronic drum sets. You can learn in real time playing alongside
your teacher!

RhythmPlay and RhythmSection are classes for kids 7-10 and 10 -16. These expand on the kinds of group drumming activities, teachings and compositions that we have been bringing to area schools for the last eleven years. Kids learn to play djembe and conga drums, drum set and mallet percussion like marimbas and xylophones. These instruments are specially chosen to create maximum success with minimal frustration even for absolute beginners.

Our new and expanded facility (on Waterloo St. South next to the DaVinci Ctr.) includes an expanded retail store plus numerous sunny studios and classrooms for group lessons. We now have the means of collaborating with a wide variety of local teachers and continue bringing in world-class musicians for visiting workshops. Get on our email list to stay informed. Past workshops have been led by Rick Lazar, Ken Hamm, Trichy Sankaran, Mike Stevens, Bakka and many more!

We take pride in our innovative approach to teaching a variety of hand drums both individually and through our weekly "Hands-On Drumming" groups. These classes run three nights a week for drummers of all levels including "Absolute Beginners". Owner and school director Sean Jesseau has developed his teaching methods over the last fourteen
years here in Thunder Bay. The weekly groups have been running now for eleven years!

Each year the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra's family, education, and outreach concerts provide a unique experience for thousands of Thunder Bay area school children and residents.

The TBSO provides educational concerts for students because we believe that a live symphonic music experience is both enriching and enlivening. These concerts are designed to support the appropriate grade curriculum guidelines. Teachers receive preparation materials to help ensure that the TBSO concert experience is a great introduction to the orchestra and a bountiful resource of learning opportunities.

Symphonic music connects to the study of language, history, culture, people and places, and studying music develops critical skills such as listening, timing, memory, and visual and physical coordination.

Grade 3: Symphony Sing-Along

In 2006-07, the TBSO performed music from around the world with select classes joining the orchestra on stage to perform percussion-based traveling music, composed by the classes themselves, between each piece. Not only did this program ensure teachers could meet the music curriculum, many took full advantage of the theme and connected the experience with other classroom subjects (i.e. geography).

84 students performed with the TBSO

714 students participated as audience members

500 family & friends attended the 2 evening repeat performance

Due to the success of Adventures in Music, and excellent feedback from teachers and students, Viva Voce was offered in our 2007-08 season and Symphony Sing-Along in 2008-2009, 2009-2010, and 2010-2011. This program has students singing traditional Canadian folk songs accompanied by the TBSO. The classes rehearsed with the orchestra, performed for each other and other students, and performed two evening concerts for family and friends. In 2010-2011 season Grade 3 Sing-Along program over 400 students performed with the TBSO and over 800 family and friends attended the two evening performances.

The 2011-2012 Season Grade 3 project is currently being developed. More details will be available by end of July. For more information about the Grade 3 program, please contact the TBSO Office.

Grade 6: Musicians in the Classroom (MIC)

This award-winning program is designed for Grade 6 classes in both the Public and Catholic school systems. For this program, the TBSO splits into six small ensembles of orchestral selections ranging from quartets to quintets and visits local classrooms. Each presentation is approximately 45 minutes long. The same classes will also have the opportunity to attend a full orchestra education concert at the award-winning, acoustically brilliant Thunder Bay Community Auditorium.

MICs educational objective is to introduce students to the instruments of the orchestra and elements of music in an intimate and familiar environment. The students have the opportunity to meet musicians, hear and see music-making up close, and hear each instrument demonstrated individually. It is a chance for professional musicians to share their love of music in a very direct way with young people.

Schools will be faxed applications in mid-Fall. In-class presentations occur in late October-November and the concert is typically held in January.

Musical Bridges - exciting the imagination of all generations

The TBSO has a strong commitment to reach diverse audiences and make live symphonic music available to everyone in Thunder Bay. In the community outreach project, the TBSO offers free public concerts at Lakehead University, Confederation College, local high schools, and other public venues.

For more information about these events, call the TBSO office at 474-2284 or check out our website www.tbso.ca. Locations and dates to be announced.
