Ahnisnabae Art Gallery was first founded in 1997 as Ahnisnabae Art and in 2005 added Gallery, now known as Ahnisnabae Art Gallery, meaning "Nice People's Art". We are Thunder Bay's premier native art/craft gallery that specializes in authentic quality work form local and regional artists.

My inspiration to open a Native gallery came from my Late husband, Roy Thomas, who painted out of this studio for many years.  My inspiration was "there is a need in Thunder Bay to have a Native art gallery to promote Roy's art but also to promote other First Nations artists' artwork".  I consider Ahnisnabae Art Gallery a home base where artists can come and display their artwork for the public to see.  The gallery also promotes our youth artists and also displays their works for sale.  For more information or to book an appointment, contact Louise Thomas.

Die Active Art Collective

On-going throughout the summer, this collective is aimed at mentoring and supporting new artists while creating a unique and contemporary alternative publication. Its purpose is to mentor young/ new artists on the artist-run model of working as a collective by encouraging them to bring a practical collective project into fruition. The collective involves youth ages 14-30ish and is always accepting new members.  A series of free art workshops, studio visits, exhibitions, performances and events are created and produced by the youth group each summer.  All parts of the project are guided by the gallery and the end result is a multi-media package including a zine, handmade buttons, mono-prints, and a C.D of local youth bands. Together they form a low-tech publishing network of extraordinary richness and variety.
The Die Active project fills a gap in the arts community in terms of art education and youth/community involvement. This is a new initiative for young artists who show aptitude and initiative to be future leaders in the arts. The publication produced concentrates on art as its focus, however topics cover a broad range including: contemporary-traditional to experimental writing (poetry and short prose), politics, art and design, comics/graphic arts, ephemera, personal journals, social theory, single topic obsession; content far enough outside of the main stream to be prohibitive of inclusion in more traditional media. "rock the paper scissors"
This Summer will feature: techniques in street art, video art, drawing, print making, zines, button making and all things alternative.
The group meets up every second Thursday, 6pm at DefSup
[ 250 Park Ave Definitely Superior Art Gallery]
FIRST MEETING: Thursday MAY 20th,6pm @ DefSup
Get ready to be a part of one of the most amazing and relevant art movements in Thunder Bay.
