AFNOO is the umbrella group for 24 francophone organizations in Northwestern Ontario.  Marianne offers information on the history of art therapy and expressive arts as well as innovative ideas and specific projects to encourage everyone  to benefit from the arts and all it can offer.  Marianne graduated with an HBA in Psychology, is a certified Child and Youth Counselor, and currently works as a School Social Worker.  She has experienced the wonder of the creative process both first hand and with the challenging children and youth she works with.  Her program is called "Art for the Heart" and focuses on self-expression and the development of healthy coping skills.  She is willing to adapt the program to meet individual needs.

Marilyn McIntosh is the Ontario Arts Council's Northwestern Consultant based in Thunder Bay.  Marilyn is available to promote and assist with all programs offered by the OAC including the Northern Arts Program (NAP). NAP is a recent program of the OAC focused on supporting artists & arts organizations in Northern Ontario.

The Regional Multicultural Youth Centre provides programming for youth ages 11 to 19. They have a newsletter, social and recreational activities, after school programs and summer activities. Workshops, presentations and forums are held on various issues such as improving race relations. They offer Girl Power Programming where young women look at the issues of self-esteem and empowerment. In their leadership development programming they encourage young people of all backgrounds to learn to get along. They also have a craft store and have held arts and craft shows.

TBMA is a multicultural non-profit organization that offers programs for newcomers to Canada. Language services, translation and interpretation, and various pension and consulate connections are available through the Multicultural Association. A new project for teachers and students is a learning exchange program that can link students from around the world to work on a project together.

There are four branches of the Thunder Bay Public Library:  two large resource libraries and two community branches.  The Resource Libraries have
a wider selection of materials, services and programs such as Children's Internet and parent-teacher collections.  In addition, the Brodie Resource Library is the main reference library for the city, with local history materials, government documents and an extensive reference collection.

Tour the Library
Tours of the library are provided upon request.  There is no charge for tours.

Tours for children in grade 4 and under are coordinated by the Children's Services Departments of the Brodie and Waverley Resource Libraries.  Call Brodie at 624-4208 and Waverley at 684-6816.
Tours for children in grade 5 and up, young people or adults are coordinated by the Reference Services Departments of the Brodie and Waverley Resource Libraries.  Call Brodie at 624-4200 and Waverley at 684-6800. Thunder Bay Transit offers FREE bus service to any school class visiting the library. Call the library for more information!

Tours of the Reference Services Department or Children's Services Department are usually conducted on Thursdays, but other days and times can be arranged, depending on available staffing.  Tours of the Community Branches are available during their opening hours, and are also dependent upon available staffing.

Adult Programs
Throughout the year, the library offers many programs of interest to adults such as book discussion clubs, writing workshops, public readings, health and legal educations programs, craft and how-to programs and film nights.

Reference - Local History and Digitized     
                   Collections
The Thunder Bay Public Library offers The Gateway to Northwestern Ontario
History on its website.  This is an electronic database of historical photographs and documents pertaining to the history of northwestern Ontario
with particular emphasis on logging, mining and railroads.  This award winning regional resource is accessible from the Thunder Bay Public Library's website at: http://www.tbpl.ca/

The Thunder Bay Public Library also offers an extensive Local History
Collection documenting the history and development of the City of Thunder
Bay.  This collection includes books, maps, newspaper clippings, CDs,
videos and pamphlets.  Materials pertaining to the northwestern Ontario
region are also acquired, organized and preserved.

Children's Programs
Children's Services offers a full range of free programming for children of all ages.  The
Readers are Leaders program provides Grades 1, 2, and 3 readers with one-on-one support from teen and adult volunteers.  A wide range of story
times, puppet shows, craft hours, music concerts, magicians, author visits and literature based theme programs encourage children to discover a world
of information and imagination.

The library provides children and their parents with a wide range of books, DVDs, videos, CD books, cassette books, and CD-ROMs to support learning. Information for projects, access to Internet for children, and help choosing books for your child is available from friendly, knowledgeable Children's Services staff. Literacy is a life-long gift to give your child.
